Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgical Procedures

Minimally invasive tools and techniques allow surgeons to perform many procedures through small, keyhole-size incisions that typically require only a stitch or two to close. For patients, this means a shorter hospital stay, a speedier recovery and getting back to their daily routine faster.

Our minimally invasive surgery team — the most experienced in the region — comprises more than 200 general and specialty surgeons, offering multidisciplinary expertise that ranges from cardiac surgery to urological, gynecological and surgical cancer procedures, as well as bloodless surgery options.

Learn More About Your Options for Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery

The benefits of minimally invasive and robotic surgery are significant:

  • Reduced pain and trauma
  • Fewer complications
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Reduced risk of blood loss (fewer transfusions)
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

Robotic Surgery at Sarasota Memorial

In the 1990s, Sarasota Memorial helped pioneer robotic surgery, participating in clinical trials that would shape the technology, protocols and surgeon training. In 2006, SMH became the first hospital in Florida to deploy the first commercially available da Vinci surgical robot. Today, our Robotic Surgery team is the region's most experienced and our Robotic Surgery program is the region's most comprehensive, delivering the greatest number of robotic specialties and the widest range of robotic procedures available.

Sarasota Memorial's Robotic Surgery program features:

From handling delicate heart/lung, esophageal and pancreatic cancer surgery to bariatric, gynecological and prostate cancer procedures to orthopedic, thoracic, gastrointestinal, general and bloodless surgery, our team is equipped with revolutionary tools that provide greater precision and optimal outcomes.

da Vinci Surgical Robotic Systems

Sarasota Memorial's surgical robot fleet includes five da Vinci Xi systems, the latest and most advanced available.

The da Vinci Xi systems are optimized for complex cancers, but our da Vinci-trained surgeons cover multiple specialties across both hospital campuses, including Colorectal, General Surgery, Gynecology and GYN Oncology, Hepatobiliary/Gastrointestinal, Oncology, Thoracic and Urology.

The da Vinci system provides superior visualization, enhanced dexterity and greater precision for complex conditions. Its 3D cameras deliver magnification 10 times that of the naked eye, while its instruments offer articulation and range of motion that would be impossible with the human wrist.

Recently acquired, the da Vinci SP® system is a fourth-generation da Vinci surgical system. This single port system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for narrow, deep access surgery. The ability to use one small incision or enter through a natural opening in the body creates a minimally invasive option for complex procedures.

ROSA Knee Robot & Ortho OR teamROSA, the Robotic Surgical Assistant

The ROSA Robotic Surgical Assistant is a minimally invasive device that enhances the safety and reliability of hip-replacement and knee-replacement surgery. ROSA provides our patients with better outcomes, a faster return to active life, and longer-lasting relief from debilitating joint pain caused by Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis and other knee disease.

ROSA’s innovative technology and specialized 3D-imaging software eliminate the guesswork for orthopedic surgery teams. Using the real-time, patient-specific data collected by ROSA, our specially trained surgeons create customized surgical plans and can precisely position new knees and hips for optimized results.

For more information, help with an orthopedic surgery referral at the SMH-Sarasota campus or to find out if ROSA-assisted joint replacement is right for you, call 941-917-7777.

Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System

The latest addition to SMH-Venice is the Mako System that allows surgeons to personalize total knee, partial knee, and total hip procedures to each patient. The Mako SmartRobotics for Total Knee, Partial Knee and Total Hip transforms the way total and partial replacements are performed, by helping surgeons know more and cut less.

Mako SmartRobotics’ 3D CT-based planning coupled with AccuStop™ haptic technology can help surgeons plan for better outcomes like less pain and quicker recovery times compared to manual surgery, helping patients get back to the things they love, quicker.

For more information, help with an orthopedic referral at the SMH-Venice Campus, or to find out if Mako-assisted surgery is right for you, call 941-261-7777.

ExcelsiusGPS, a Robotic Surgical Assistant

The ExcelsiusGPS, a robotic surgical assistant specializing in minimally invasive back surgery and the latest addition to the Orthopedic Surgery team at Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota Campus.

The first technology of its kind, Globus Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS features a remote-controlled robotic arm and an X-ray navigation platform that functions like your vehicle’s GPS. Using the robot, our spine care specialists and surgeons can achieve unparalleled precision in cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine surgeries — even the most complex back procedures — with all the benefits of robotic surgery over traditional procedures. Is robotic back surgery right for? Call 941-917-7777 to find out.

ION Endoluminal System

The newly acquired Intuitive ION Endoluminal System is a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform used to navigate and biopsy the delicate far reaches of the lungs with optimized precision, enabling earlier and more-accurate diagnosis of small and hard-to-reach lung nodules.

ION's advanced technology integrates the latest innovations in flexible robotics, software imaging and navigation to provide improved diagnostic techniques for lung cancer and other lung disease. Minimally invasive and more accurate than ever before, the system utilizes a special endoscope equipped with shape-sensing technology - millions of tiny hair-like optical fibers embedded into the scope - providing real-time precise location that is able to guide the catheter through the lobes of the lung, even as the lungs move.
