COVID-19 Testing, Visitation Policies & Concerns
As part of important safety measures we've instituted during the COVID-19 pandemic, all Labor & Delivery patients will be tested for COVID-19, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.
Click here for the current policies for visitors and support people for the Mother-Baby, Labor-Delivery, Pediatrics and NICU units.
If you have questions about how these temporary changes may impact your birth experience at SMH-Venice, call 941-261-0450.
Pregnant women are high risk for developing severe COVID-19. Developing COVID-19 during pregnancy increases a woman’s chances of having poor pregnancy outcomes, including pre-term delivery (before 37 weeks) and pregnancy loss. Vaccination before / during pregnancy is the safest way to prevent COVID-19 in pregnancy. It is highly recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG), the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Sarasota Memorial and First Physicians Group. Family-centered Birth Experience
The Birthing Suites at SMH-Venice are designed so that laboring women, their support people and baby can stay together in the same room throughout the birth experience — from labor and delivery through recovery and post-partum.
Each Birthing Suite features a couch that converts to a guest bed; an interactive, digital display board for patient information and education; and free Wi-Fi. Eight of the 10 suites are equipped with hydrotherapy tubs to ease discomfort during labor, and the others have spacious showers.
Visitors: Keeping you and baby safe is our priority. Visitors are given a badge with limited access, and all units have visitor checkpoints. The only children allowed to visit you during your stay are your children.
Security: Upon baby’s arrival, he/she will be given a Hugs Infant Protection System anklet tag for secure monitoring and enhanced security.
Photos / Videos: Video, audio recordings and livestreaming the birth are not permitted. Your care team will let you know when photography is allowed.

Toiletries for you and warm clothing for your support person.
A “going home” outfit and blanket for baby.
An infant car seat (bring it on the morning of your discharge day).
